About Alameda

The city of Alameda is an island in the San Francisco Bay. It is cherished for its small town charm, quiet neighborhoods and great schools. Alameda is known for its beautiful housing stock. It has about 1500 Victorian homes, many craftsman and bungalow style homes built before 1930.
The Bay Farm Island section of Alameda was originally, you guessed it, farm land. Developed in the late 20th century, the marsh land separating it from Oakland was filled. Although it is no longer an island, it retains the name.

Alameda is an island in the San Francisco Bay.

The last part of Alameda is the Coast Guard Island. It is located in the estuary between Alameda’s main island and the city of Oakland. The Coast Guard base serves the pacific coast and the San Francisco Bay.

Originally inhabited by the Ohlone Indians, the area was incorporated in 1853. The city became a transit hub and for a short time was the terminus for the transcontinental railway. An Alameda pier connected the east bay to San Francisco via ferries.

Today Alameda has 78,630 residents and 32,351 housing units, 53% of which are single family homes. It as accessed by a tunnel and four bridges. It has a thriving down town, two in fact. Both Webster and Park Streets have many choices for restaurants, shopping and services. Alameda has a long beach that is part of the East Bay Regional Park system. You’ll see kiteboarders off the beach most afternoons. Alameda has an active art community, beautiful parks, bay trails and mild temperatures.

Public transportation options are many, including ferry terminals servicing San Francisco and the Peninsula and busses serving San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Many Alamedans use BART and AmTrack stations in Oakland for their commute.
